InApp Pay for iPod Touch
October 16, 2009
Have you heard? Apple is now allowing developers to release free applications that can then charge you for upgrades and special edition features. The app will only charge you with your consent. This opens a whole new world of apps including shopping apps and others that would allow you to purchase right in the app. And all the LITE and PRO version apps? They'll only be part of the app store history from now on because developers will be able to release only one version and then charge for the PRO right in the app. Pretty exciting stuff! This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on!

Redfin Real Estate
October 16, 2009
The new Redfin Real Estate app is truly a one of a kind tool for any real estate search. It combines a dynamic ability to search for properties, sort hundreds of listings, and contains one of the largest databases of open houses updated daily. The app is free but almost seems like it should be a paid app because it provides so much value. A great feature is that you can return to recent searches and mark your favorite homes by tapping a heart or breaking the heart to remove it from favorites.

The Redfin Real Estate app also has one of the most best collections of actual photos of listings because when users save photos of a property it uploads them and includes them on the listing in the future for all users to see. Very ingenious. Works for iPod touch? You bet. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on!

Real Change or Fad?
October 15, 2009
So the big question is, will the app craze die out as a fad or are we experiencing real and lasting change that will permeate the way we live into the future? It's hard to forget the recent memory of Apple desktop widgets, which seem to have all but disappeared. However apps are a whole new ball game, with the financial incentives for creative development that Apple has been so careful to foster. It's a question that an entire smart phone industry as well as tends of thousands of developers are hinging on.

Only time will tell, but an educated guess would say that it will be something in between. Surely some of the apps that we download are nothing more than novelty, to be shown off to friends and utilize new iPhone features, but other apps available today are truly revoltuionary in the power they put in the hands of a user in a mobile platform. The key will be for developers to start to move toward providing true value in apps rather than hoping for million dollar overnight apps for $0.99 in the app store. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on!

New Starbucks Apps
September 24, 2009
Starbucks has two new iPhone apps (a double shot, if you will), including a virtual Starbucks card that lets you manage your balance, and - if you're in Seattle and Silicon Valley - actually pay by scanning an on-screen barcode.

The trials haven't expanded from the West Coast yet, but the Starbucks Card Mobile app is free for anyone to download. It also lets you top up your credit, and view previous transactions. In recent times, the card idea has turned into something of a loyalty program where you get free Wi-Fi and refills. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! Facebook App
July 10, 2008
Facebook has just launched their new iPhone app and it is amazing. It's one of the best applications I've seen on the iPhone so far and I actually like using Facebook on the iPhone with this new app more than on the actual Facebook website.

Chris Messina has a really good series of screenshots of the new Facebook iPhone app which will give you a better idea of what the various screens look like. The app was designed by Joe Hewitt, who joined Facebook through the recent acquisition of Parakey, the company he co-founded with Blake Ross. Both Joe and Blake worked together on Firefox and Joe is the developer behind the wonderful Firebug extension for Firefox.

Masable's Pete Cashmore was tipped off about the launch of the Facebook iPhone app earlier today, which MacRumors followed-up on. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! [Read more at Languishing Squid]

Time Mobile App
September 23, 2009
Avid readers of the popular Time magazine, be it the online or printed version, will be glad to know that they can now read their favorite magazine any time and anywhere. Time.com Mobile is a well-built iPhone app that gives you all the good content of Time magazine.

Time.com joins the slew of online newspapers and magazines that brought their premium content to the millions of iPhone users with its very own Time.com native iPhone application. Time.com Mobile provides you with various content from Time.com including top news, blog posts, top lists articles, quote of the day, most popular stories and multimedia content that includes photo essays and videos. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! [Read more at Bright Hub]

Optical Illusions
September 29, 2009
Steer clear of the Opical Illusions app, because it looks like the only good ratings and reviews it has ever received has been from the developer himself. It's often hard to tell if a developer is giving high ratings to one of his own apps unless you see that there are a whole string of bad reviews in a row and then a whole string of good reviews in a row.

Honestly, I'm pretty surprised the app has made it to the top 50 list becuase it's not that great! This is definitely not a free touch apps you want to download.

Bump Contact Sharing
September 28, 2009
Bump has only been available for download from the App Store for a month, but already the social networking app has secured a place in iPhone app history. Bump became the one billionth download from the App Store when a Connecticut teenager selected the free app on Thursday.

It's a pretty fortuitous turn of events for an app that aims to help you exchange contact information by bumping your iPhone or iPod touch with another user.

Bump is the first App Store offering from Bump Technologies, the brainchild of ex-Texas Instruments employees David Lieb, Andy Huibers, and Jake Mintz. [Read more at PC World]

I'm personally find Bump's recent success to be an extremely interesting psychological and social case study. There are innumberable other contacts sharing apps and methods, including an easy contact share feature built right into the "Contacts" section of the iPhone. I think that Bump owes its success not only to the ease and simplicity with which they've designed the interface, but more importantly to people's desire to have some physical symbol or union in recognition of creating a friendship or new relationship. It very much provides the phsyical contact that is present in a handshake or other physical introduction. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on!

Fandango
March 17, 2009
Finally, no more waiting in long lines to see the this year's summer blockbusters thanks to Fandango for the iPhone and iTouch.

Fandango recently released their very own free App Store application that allows users to preview trailers, find local theaters, and even make ticket purchases while on the go. The application uses your iPhone's or iTouch's core location feature to find the theater nearest you while allowing you to store them as favorites, saving precious seconds for your next movie viewing experience. If you are unaware how to get to the theater, simply tap on the provided address and Google Maps will help you find your way. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! [Read more at AppAdvice.com]

Rhapsody
August 24, 2009
This morning, subscription music service Rhapsody is putting public pressure on Apple to approve its new music streaming app by making its case directly to the press. Unlike other streaming music apps already on the iPhone from Pandora, Slacker, AOL Radio, imeem, and Sirius XM, RhapsodyÕs would allow users to individually select and listen to any one of the 8 million songs in its catalog on-demand or create their own streaming playlists, as opposed to listening to a more radio-like, random assortment. It is in the same boat as Spotify, which is also awaiting approval for its music-streaming iPhone app. [Read more at TechCrunch]

Google Mobile
The new version of Google's Mobile iPhone application that includes voice search recognition was made available as a free download on the App Store last night.

"The new Google Mobile App for iPhone makes it possible for you to do a Google web search using only your voice," said Dave Burke, Engineering Manager for Google's mobile team. "Just hold the phone to your ear, wait for the beep, and say what you're looking for."

In addition to allowing users to speak their search queries instead of typing them, the updated app (Free, App Store) includes an Apps Tab that allows you to reorder Google Apps to make it easier to access your favorites. [Read more at AppleInsider]

Vampires LIVE
September 29, 2009
Vampires Live is rated an astounding 4/5 stars! This is the highest rating of any of the current top fifty free touch apps, with the exception of cartoon wars, facebook, dictionary, shazam, and mobsters. Even so the game is very impressive with indisputably some of the best graphics of any free touch games available today. It's popularity also shows that dark and sinister themes are in no way shied away from by touch users! This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! Discretion is adviced.

Google Earth
At long last, Google has released Google Earth for the iPhone and iTouch! I've been expecting this to happen for months. Especially after I saw another Google Earth-like application on the iPhone back in May. Apparently some folks in Australia were first to downloaded Google Earth for the iPhone. CNET has an initial review - and it looks fantastic. I quickly managed to download it - see my updated review below (this app is awesome!). The app is free of course. Or you can search the app store from your iPhone. [Read more at GEarthBlog]

Flashlight
Flashlight is a simple, but incredibly convenient, application that turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a flashlight. Flashlight can help you find your way in a dark room, unlock your door on a dark night, read a map, or a thousand other issues. It starts quickly, giving you a bright, full screen light. It even looks like a real flashlight with your choice of bulbs! Tens of thousands of users use Flashlight every day. We've heard from moms, dads, kids, hunters, pilots, sailors, campers, soldiers and countless others who are delighted at how handy it is to have an always available flashlight. Every iPod Touch or iPhone owner can use Flashlight. After all, it's always dark somewhere. This is definitely one of the free touch apps you don't want to miss out on! [Read more at ExactMagic.com]

Tap Tap Revenge
The goal in Tap Tap Revenge is to tap at the bottom of the screen in time with bubbles that descend from three colored beams of light that snap and crackle with energy. The more bubbles you can pop in time, the higher your score. You'll also get points for shaking the iPhone or iPod touch left and right or up and down in time with arrows that descend down those light beams.

There's a two-player mode that pits both players at either end of an iPhone or iPod touch (and changes the string geometry a little bit to make more sense); you can also turn off the shake feature.

The game includes only a handful of music tracks and offers no way of linking to a resident iTunes library that may be on your device, so the music selection gets very old quickly. But Tapulous says that more tracks are coming very soon. (The game can use new tracks as soon as they're available). [Read more at MacWorld]
